Coming Friday

Ah man... I haven't been able to sleep well for the past few nights. Everynight, there'd be different dreams participated in by lots of people, with ma being a constant feature. Either I've been too consciously/subconsciously thinking about the date (anniversary's this friday, followed by grandpa's on sat), or it's her way of reminding us not to forget (as if we will). In any case, i wake up tired, and deflated. =P

Am gg to meet MLL for dinner tonight. Perhaps we'd ta pao zi-cha and munch in front of tv, and watch the soon-to-be-overdue-rented-dvd (The Devil Wears Prada). After that, we'd probably do a mass prayer for good/sterling results on Friday. 2 yrs ago, results were also released on the same day. Have got nothing to say.

Uncle's bday

Today's my paternal uncle's (one of my fav) bday. Following the family tradition, I got him a big duck drumstick. Nicely-roasted and glistening, it emitted a saliva-inducing aroma that can be smelt hundreds of metres away. It was sold to me for a whooping S$6.50! But everything's worth it when I saw how uncle savoured it, smacking his lips with great satisfaction. =)

Some of us trooped down to this cantonese restaurant "Zi Yean" off Lengkok Bahru for his bday treat. Had Yu Sheng, Stir-Fried Kai Lan, Imperial Herbal Chicken, Fried Ee Mee, and *gasp* Pen(2) Cai(4) - for the un-elightened, Pen(2) Cai(4) is a high-class item, in the same (or even beyond) league as sharksfin and abalone. Perhaps it is in sama sama category as "Buddha Jumps Over The Wall". It is a big bowl of delicacies containing fish maw, dried oysters, moss, abalone, mushrooms, roast meats, chicken, duck, cabbage, dried scallops, fresh scallops, beancurd skin etc etc. This is my first time eating it. Yummy, but I think I prefer Cold Combination Plate or Suckling Pig. This one's too heavy-going. But it's a treat, so I'm not complaining. =P

Pen Cai

Alrights, it's time for plain porridge now. Need a break from all the luxurious, cholesterol-laden food. Too much of a good thing's not so good, I know. And yes yes, it's time to exercise again.. =P

Of soup, vivo and more...

Today, I boiled soup. First time in 2 yrs since mama's went to the Heavens. 6 mths ago, I cooked rice. Now, another baby step. Not too difficult to boil nutritous, herbal chicken soup. We may just do that once a week from now on, to boost health.

Anyways, this week, there'd be no baking. Simply had to clear some work that had long been put on the backburner. Next week though, the oven will running again. Await the updates.

Yesterday, went with pa to vivo city for dinner. The crowd's thinned down quite visibly from the initial-opening-heights of hundreds of thousands. Yesterday, there was room to saunter around with swinging arms and not hit anyone. Queued at Hong Kong Kim Gary Restaurant (the only outlet in S'pore) for half hr with a growling stomach. But it was all worth it when my steaming bowl of spicy korean noodles with pork chop arrived. Yummy! And to cool it off, I had an icy honey pomelo drink. Shiok! =) Dad had some cheesy fish fillet baked rice, and a hot almond tea. Not too bad as well. U can give Kim Gary a try next time u hit vivo.

But the "find of the night" occurred while we were strolling around with a rounded stomach - on the top floor, tucked away in a corner next to the connecting rail station to Sentosa, we found this very nice food court!

Food Republic with its fancy, flowery sign

The deco there is soothingly old-style with a modern touch (no contradiction here), with wooden tables and chairs, and stalls done up like traditional hawker carts. The variety is eye-boggling, with many local and malaysian delights, and even dou(4) jiang(4) you(2) tiao(2)! Hokkien mee is also served wrapped in a semi-coned banana leaf. Toast Box has an outlet within too, so it's really a nice food court to eat at, unlike the other kopitiams and food junctions, which are all styled the same - clinically boring.

Overview

A look at some of the stalls up close

Chefs in action (frying dough fritters in this case)
Chingay is being telecast live on TV now. The usual splattering of colours, music and floats. Only this year, the audience has to pay for seats. And we have some post-65 MPs trying to do hip hop. Oh well, to each his own. Go ahead and dance, if it makes u happy.

Some pics and a return to normalcy...

Night view, across the river, from Esplanade

Grand dame, Merlion, spouting magic water

Me, uncle, and uncle's fren (partially hidden) with Esplanade in background

2 days back into normalcy and there's some trouble getting used to the alarm going off at 6am (after so many luxurious days of 9am). Anyways, there seem to be still the CNY mood lingering ard, for the office's pretty much cleared out by the time the clock showed 5pm. For me, I've been procrastinating some of the brainy, urgent stuff for the mechanical, non-urgent work..

Uncle's gg back tomorrow, after a week of reunion with us. Am gg to miss him a little, for I thought this stay has been more effective at bond building compared to all his previous trips to SIN and also my recent trip to NJ. Wish him a smooth journey back, till next time (for the bum-burning 20+hr flight again)!

A dear pal said my social circle is stagnated. Argh, he's frighteningly frank. I guess, as one ages, the inertia to maintain status quo gets bigger. Gross.

Chu Yi, Er, San

Realised this year, I had a more happening CNY than the previous. Perhaps it's coz my US uncle's ard.

Anyways, on Chu Yi, after the temples and visit to Fifth Uncle's house, I brought US uncle to Lau Pat Sat for 100+ bucks worth of satay, sting ray, sotong, clams, chic wings, hei(3) zhuo(4)/prawn rolls, kang kong, teh terik and beer (lest u think its only the 2 of us demolishing this indigestion-inducing buffet, it's for a party of 8). Anyways, we walked off the calories with a 2hr stroll ard Esplanade + Merlion. Were super duper lucky to catch the beautiful CNY Fireworks display (didn't even know that was being scheduled) - brillant sparklers lighting up the whole black sky, shiok! Didn't dare to venture into the "Chun(1) Dao(4) He(2) Ban(4)" Marina Promenade CNY fair across the road from Esplanade - one look at the crowd is enough to send one into un-subsidable hyperventilation. Craziness. =P

On Chu Er, it was time for "dry swimming"! Haha, went to 3rd uncle's house for lunch and mahjong warm-up (lost 10 precious bucks), then hopped over to East Coast to say hi to a JC pal's newborn. Another reminder to get things going at my own side. =P Later at night, some IE and volunteer buddies decided to pop over for a last-min-arranged but still equally successful/enjoyable mahjong session. Played from 10pm to 3am, and I won 14 bucks. Haha, net gain of 4 weeny dollars but lots of good fun/bonding.

On Chu San (which was over just 20min ago), it was dim sum lunch with all relatives (inc US uncle) at the infamous Cantonese restaurant - Red Star. 15 pax, 300+ bucks. I think we've really gone quite mad, but then again, it's CNY.. so heck. =P Then, it's to IE pal's house for stoning and crapping, before heading back home for *gasp* some feeble attempts at work. Managed to tick 2 tiny items off the to-do list, so hopefully nightmares won't haunt me tonite.

My dad says ppl used to celebrate CNY for 15 days. I wonder if that still applies in the present age.

p.s. will load some pics of pretty Esplanade and Merlion in the next post.

The Pig Has Arrived

Happy New Piggy Year to all! =)

Well, realised I've disappeared for a while. =P Can't helped it loh, the big rush before lunar new year is always unavoidable. The last-min cleaning-buying frenzy is really one of a kind man. Over the past 2 days, was also putting together a few more bottles of cherry rosettes (seem like this is a crowd favorite, compared to carrot cake) and a trip to changi airport to fetch US uncle. Had reunion with another 90+ tables of strangers at some chinese resturant-clubhouse, then went temples to say hi to ma & grandparents, and finally am back home now to catch a breather before heading to fifth uncle's house for ang bao collection.

Can't believe it's Nian Chu Yi mid afternoon liao. And I thought I would have time to sneak in a movie on my own, a short nap, as well as maybe (*gasp*) some work! Hahahahahaha, but oh well, too ambitious as usual. Family visits will conclude by today, and for Chu Er and Chu San, it'd be some meetups with frens loh. Hope everyone else is in holiday mood, then there won't be too much guilt over undone work.

Anyways, one observation made was that ppl nowadays seem to be so much more casual abt traditions liao. I remember how we always wear new, red clothes with new "nei(4) zai(4) mei(3)" as well but today, as we drove ard on roads, I saw none of that red splash. Instead, it's just white, beige, an occasional pink and orange, as well as (*gasp gasp*) head-to-toe BLACK! And ppl dress down too, some even pottering ard in flip flops and berms. Hmmmm, I'd probably wring the neck of my grandchildren (if I ever get to that stage) should they attempt to enter my house in black, without mandarine orange and a few lucky-sounding words, with nicely combed hair. Hahaha, when it comes to family ties and festive stuff, I'm a big traditionalist at heart, no doubt abt it.

Ah well, too bad one of my mahjong kakis is away in malacca for CNY, so there's no "ka(1)" to play this time round. To the rest of you who are trying ur luck at the cards/mahjong tables, have a great time bonding & winning! To the rest, happy pigging out and either collecting or giving ang baos!

Happy New Year my dears, may the yr ahead be a smooth and safe one for us all. =)

Love in all around.. (except where I am, I guess)

Swoon!

A friend just lent me this wonderful ang moh CD - "Love - Finest collection of timeless love songs". Hahahaha, don't u faint yet! The title may sound hopeless but if I, being the ultimate cheena pop queen aka loyal faithful of FM 93.3/FM 83.3, can vouch for the desirability of this newly-published CD, you've at least got to spare a min to read what's in this collection!

Amongst my favs in this CD of 19 new and old classics:
1) James Blunt - You're Beautiful
2) Cyndi Lauper - True Colors
3) Ronan Keating - When You Say Nothing At All
4) Daniel Powter - Bad Day
5) Sarah McLachlan - Angel
6) The Corrs - What Can I Do
7) Michael Buble - Home

Super duper! Not mushy mushy meaningless ones nor catchy candy pop types that exist solely to push up sales.

That dear fren's getting married soon and she'd be using no. 3 as one of the march-in songs. May it be a smooth, sweet wedding day for this couple. =) I'd be a busy bridesmaid come March. I'd ask for a receptionist job too - the most convenient place for short-sighted cupid to strike. Haha.

*shake head & sighz day*

Sighz, Sat's just abt to be over.. and i haven't done much except.. flip that thick stack of Straits Times and hover over the oven watching my platefuls of cherry rosettes cook.. i'm already halfway in zonk-out land now (only 9+pm!), while there's still such a long list of "must-do" to do. Argh... must be that "CNY-is-coming-so-no-need-to-work-so-hard-psychological-barrier" in action. Sighz.

Both meals today weren't satisfying as well. =P. Late lunch @ Queenstown market - only a few stalls left open, so had to eat some flimsy dark soy sauce chicken whose bone is still bloody red. Puke. The dinner's @ very-poorly-ventilated Alexander's market - dunno why pa has an urge for markets today... and i dunno why i ended up ordering dark sauce chicken in claypot again! must be senile, so similar to lunch... gross. Came out smelling like the zi-cha stall.. very gross. =P

Hope tomorrow's gg to be better. Will be house-cleaning, baking cakes and doing work. A lame attempt to be superwoman.

Hope I won't end up in markets. And hope pa's joint pain will go away soon.

*shake head & sighz day*

MC on thurs

Will be on MC tomorrow. Somehow caught a sily cold. Thought it was just usual sinus/allergy but turned out otherwise. Drowsy, with/without medication. Won't be resisting a day of stay-in and zzz. And if I manage to stay clear-headed, will try to clear some backlog.

Anyways, I won't be rolling out new yummies this weekend. Will be tackling orders instead. Some big bottles of cherry rosettes and 2 full cakes to bake. I'd have fun. Not a bad start. =) Next prdt may be muffins.

Meantime, it's medicine time. Then, back to work. Just stop that silly sneezing. =P

not a super happy entry

Just finished with CNY cleaning part I - changing + washing of sofa covers and 4 sets of curtains. Whew... and back is already aching like mad. Wonder if it's just normal age-related degeneration of muscles or the result of bad posture.

Yesterday was institution's fun fair. Big event with almost a hundred stalls (games, food, crafts) and bouyed by that famous amusement rides vendor - Uncle Ringo, who brought in his mini-viking, 360deg rotation, vertical bungee, gladiator ring etc etc. Drew in a huge crowd I must say, made the cashier ringer go off non-stop. The organizer must be smiling till lip cramp. Hope everyone got enough rest and recovery before a new wk starts tomorrow. Soon, it'd be 'O' level results day.. followed closely by 'A' level results day. My turn to feel the butterflies.

Roaring bouncy dino's here for kids

Dare-devil rides for 'older children'

The big crowd

Anyways, amazingly managed to squeeze in time to bake some cookies yesterday. Will upload pics in the next entry (immediately after this). Looks like ang moh style carrot cake isn't quite a hit with your palate. Only got 1 order for a full cake. Never mind, thou shalt not be too discouraged. Every week (if I can afford the time and energy), there will be one new product. Am sure I'd eventually come up with something that'd make u say 'Yes'. Wish myself luck.

And amazingly also managed to meet up with IE buddy for a movie @ Picturehouse - 'Half Nelson'. Nice. Up for Academy awards for male and female leads amongst others. An intense show about a drug addict teacher and his friendship with a black student from dysfunctional family. Heavy stuff but I like it. And the theatre's very nice too.

The Cathay

Half Nelson - very charming Ryan Gosling

2 more weeks to CNY. House-cleaning part II (changing + washing of bedsheets and quilt covers) will take place next week. And the buying of ('un-makeable' by me as of now) traditional goodies e.g. shrimp rolls and pineapple tarts; packing of ang baos, and buying of red new clothes will also have to be done sometime within the next 1-2 wks. Hectic and tiring. But still fun.

p.s. Realised I was passed over for a friend's wedding dinner. It's quite sad. We were once quite close. Then things cooled off a little over the past yr, but still I had thought myself close enough to deserve an invite. But so wrong I was. It's sad but I still wish the couple countless yrs of marital bliss ahead.

The geomancer says...

It's Feb! Can't believe it. Pretty fast. Before you know it, i'd be wishing u a Happy New Year again. =P

Anyways, it's a record. Today's the first time, so far this yr, that I really felt a bit sian. Maybe it's coz yest's badminton game wasn't too satisfying, compounded by the fact that today's ping pong session's canceled. Maybe it's the gradual accumulation of proposals-to-write. Maybe it's just hormones. In any case, felt lousy and complainy today. And I'm not the only one on a low. TGIF.

Two nice things happened though - big WZ gave us a free ride to IMM for hideout marking. And dad came back this evening. So there's hope. Oh, dad brought home some msia fortune book (written in chinese traditional font) predicting fortune for the coming lunar yr. I'd try do an ang moh translation to my best ability (just a summarized section) for some of you. If you are a:

1) Dragon borne in yr of 1976
Family is in harmony. If you are thinking of house renovation or decoration, this is the best time. Work-wise, the load is heavy, do look after own health. You will perform very well at work and this will increase your sense of self-confidence. However, be careful not to lose important documents along the way.

2) Horse borne in yr of 1978
Love luck is on the rise, a rosy outlook predicted for you and beloved. Money matters, however, are tight. Do monitor your own financial situation and avoid spending unnecessarily, especially in the case of internet shopping.

3) Goat borne in yr of 1979
Friendship star's shining bright, and ur social life will become much more hectic. There's a chance of sparks flying between u and a fren, and you may end up as a couple. Investment luck's looking good, and you may be able to up fatten reserves through stocks and deeds.

5) Monkey borne in yr of 1980
Relationship with family goes on a low. Although much friction is abound, the disagreements can be eventually resolved without permanent damage. You may experience periodic urges to spend on things of little use, resulting in regret.

p.s. If ur sign's not listed above and u'd like to know e outlook (however cheesy/dubious it sounds), just drop me a note with ur "animal and year". I take anonymous requests, no prob. =)

All said, take the above with a nano pinch of salt. Entertainment is the word. May piggie yr bring u lots of porky luck.
